Jefferson Airplane - Never Argue With A German
____________________________________________
Do not argue with a German
If he is tired
His car may go very fast
But it
is racing against walls

This 1935 German officer's Army dagger had hung on the wall in my grandfather's library ever since I could remember. It now honorably hangs on my wall since his passing two years ago. It was willed to me because he knew of my fascination for it and all that it represents. Many times I'd listen quietly as he would once again tell the story of how he had taken it off the body of a Nazi officer he had to justifiably slay during the Battle of the Bulge. I was entranced by his recounting of how he served with General Patton's Third Army. I could easily visualize how bravely they fought the enemy at the Siege of Bastogne on their march to Berlin. Each soldier knew that the only way back home was through Berlin. Once Berlin was liberated, and Nazi Germany defeated, my grandfather returned from WWII a medal decorated war hero. Fortunately for him because sadly millions in this war never got to see home again. I always wondered about the "faceless man" who wore this dagger on his uniform as I held it in my hand while Gramps' voice softly drifted into the background with the pattering raindrops. Childlike questions such as who was he really, did he have children my age, what were his interests before the war, did he see the death camps, why did he blindly follow the doctrine of Hitler? Ruefully none of these can be answered now. I guess for my grandfather the only answer necessary at the time was kill or be killed. I'm glad, as was the world, that he and the US Allies were victorious.
Thinking of you...often, Gramps. Happy Birthday :iconblackheartplz:
